Dancing with nature: the story of Wave House

How we designed a house gathered under a wave-shaped roof that follows the land, on an olive-covered hillside, without felling a single tree.

When we first saw the site we counted 62 olive trees. Our client asked that not one be felled, so we began drawing the house through the gaps between them.

A roof like a wave

The whole house sits under a single curved roof that follows the slope. Where it rises it covers the living room, where it dips the bedrooms, and it is planted with local thyme and sage.

Measured results

Measurements in the first summer showed the rooms under the planted roof receiving about 40 percent less heat than a conventionally roofed house with the same orientation.
